DOOM is an excellent game. Doom has to be one of the best games to come out in ages, it's got the goods: guns, gore, metal, and giant demons! If your kid can. Everything about this game just blew me away. The graphics, the gore, the scenes, the gameplay! Wow, it's so intense and so thrilling, definitely the best doom game I've played. Admittedly it was lacking the old doom feel, but this new twist makes you forget that. DOOM popularized multiplayer in the genre with two different modes: Cooperative allows players to move through the single-player game together, while Deathmatch is a competitive game type where players blast at each other to collect 'frag' points for a kill and re-spawn in a random location after being killed.

For small DOS games like Rogue, you can play online immediately with your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer...). This feature is still experimental, the game may not work properly. Warning: game save should work, but you should try it early! Also, be careful to select the right game executable in the list below.

Emulator configuration

You have to choose the right game executable, then press PLAY.

To exit fullscreen mode, press escape. Playing experience can be poor due to your browser or your computer. Download Rogue and launch it with DOSBox to have the best playing experience!

If the game is too fast or too slow, try hitting CTRL-F11 (slower) and CTRL-F12 (faster).

Was happily grinding! 'Failed to load game data,' switched over to 10Rogue, not quite as classic...

Does anyone remember the Wizard's Password?

(LOL ok let me try again) to go up the stairs, I thought it was the GREATER THAN sign (aka shift-comma) and to go down the stairs it is LESS THAN sign (aka shift-period). But it's been years since I played this game that I so loved. Another game we enjoyed in college was one called HACK.

Miss U. More2020-11-16

To go up the stairs I thought it was and down the stairs

Wardawg2020-09-08

@CrowsAsFuel
I use the Shift + to descend stairs.

Wardawg2020-09-08

@MS ABENA
I play it on a WinX pc using Dosbox. The issue is when you save the game it exits. so i go to the game directory and make a copy of the save (named rogue.sav) and place it in another folder. the reason for this is when you launch rogue to play the save it gets deleted when you die. To play the Saved game launch it with this command: rogue rogue.sav
I save for significant moments in the game. currently jammed on lvl 33 because of jabberwocks and vampires.

'Monster Rooms' occur randomly throughout the game. Characteristics include monsters from levels below that don't occur on the current level and monsters that move that are normally stationary (Leprechaun and Nymph). Better to stay in the doorway and knock them off one at a time than to wander into the room.

BoyMayo2020-07-29

I randomly stumbled on a room with at least 7 monsters in it, on one of the easier floors. (Level 5, to be exact)

BoyMayo2020-07-29

I've started to notice how much luck this game requires compared to actual skill.

Buck2020-07-19

Press 'F1' to see a list of commands. Press ' to go down the stairs.

rogue/r to restore the saved game in rogue.sav
If you're running out of food on a regular basis, check those rings! Wearing any ring (except for Slow Digestion) will burn your food at twice the normal rate. Slow digestion will burn at half the normal rate so wearing Slow Digestion and another ring will negate the acceleration. Be careful about putting on unidentified rings! If they're cursed you can't remove it (them) until remove curse is read.

Smellypants2020-06-23

PRess F1 to see all commands, shift and together let you go downstairs

CrowsAsFuel2020-06-13

How do you go down the stairs, i've tried everything :P

Richard2020-05-31

Thank you so much for keeping this game running and available. Great work.

coxbury2020-05-29

Rachel - basically by beating them.

Rachel2020-05-25

How do I clear the record of best scores?

creditbutton2020-05-11

in the original...'S' was slime and it would divide, hence slim mold as food

coxbury2020-04-29

Why does the Hall of fame only give the top ten. In the original version, it simply kept a record of all the heroes. This made it easier to see exactly how addicted you were, and how many hours you wasted (?) playing the game!

idnas2020-04-28

I have a Mac Book Pro, how do I go down the stairs?

Coxbury2020-04-26

Ach y Fe!
Goodbye Work; Goodbye social life. Total addiction - they do say that you must keep away from drink and drugs for ever!

Old Doom Free

Just like ROGUE on CMU-G (Carnegie Mellon University) Computer Science VAX running BSD. In those days ROGUE was considered a CPU HOG if you played the game quickly. Old memories !

If you want to load your save game, you have to launch the game with the save file appended to it:
C:/ROGUEROUGE.EXE ROUGE.SAV

bruh2019-10-27

@MS ABENA
the original rogue is supposed to be perma death and no save, that's what it was meant to be.

Duke2019-06-02

Have the game running wonderfully. Found the Rogue Instruction Manual (very helpful) as is Rogue, The Dungeons Of Doom Walk through... solutions and tips. I just have NOT figured out how to SAVE a game.

Grand Lad2019-04-26

This still stands as one of the greatest games ever created. But yeah you do need to read up on the manual before you even attempt to play this game. Old but gold

I've found the manual, it's very useful https://docs.freebsd.org/44doc/usd/30.rogue/paper.pdf

BoneDehDuck2018-08-06

The search command (shift S) does not work in this version, instead it saves the game.

Garbox2018-07-06

Amazing blast from the past! As difficult as it ever was and just as brilliant! How do I load a saved game though?

Dude. Had no idea that the DOS environment didn't regenerate itself afresh with each launch. Or that DEL was active. ROGUE.EXE is gone.

If you like Quake and Duke Nukem, there is no way you can't like Doom, one of the original first-person shoot-em-up games created (Wolfenstein started it, baby!). The good thing about game designers is that they know what the public wants: a place to release their pent-up agression and frustrations. What better way to express your inner rage than in the corridors and catacombs of Doom?

Your mission is simple; kill 'em all before the evil demons take over the planet...or something like that. You begin with only a pistol to fend off Hell's scourge, but lucky for you some former soldiers, (the ones now zombified) dropped some heavy artillery for you to pick up and use at your own discretion. Although it is quite fun holding down the trigger and riddling anything with a full clip's worth of shells, it would be smarter to conserve your ammo just in case you run into one of those wicked Barons.

You should also utilize the 'strafe' (side-to-side) technique, for it will help you in many a tight situation. For instance, if you know an evil baddie lurks around the corner waiting for you to casually step into its line of fire, it would be best to strafe around the corner, fire, and strafe back to where you were. Not only do you kill the enemy, but you also get to split the scene without a scratch. Very useful against powerful enemies, (Barons again..) who could cut you down with one or two hits. Use it.

Doom also allows multi-player (aka Deathmatch) play. When you're sick of using the demons as target practice, hook up over the Internet or by modem and challenge someone as bloodthirsty as you. There are many homemade maps (.wads) out there that people have created solely for Deathmatch play, so the possible levels are endless. Plus, where else can you kill your friend and not do time?

In conclusion, Doom is one of the more simpler 3D shooter games ever made. No jumping, no looking up or down..just straight killin'. Sounds like a lot of fun to me.

Graphics: Some of the map layouts are excellent, but every once in awhile the computer gets confused and things overlap...oh well.

Sound: Groans, gasps, gurgles, and the sound of collapsing guts...yummy.

Enjoyment: What's not to like about bloody savagery? It ranks right up there with eating and sleeping...

Replay Value: How fast can you get to the end? How fast can you kill everything and get to the end? Non-stop enjoyment with Deathmatch, too.

The Union Aerospace Corporation has been experimenting with teleportation technology on Mars' moons Phobos and Deimos. After early successes, something goes wrong. It seems the scientists have opened a gateway straight to Hell. Phobos base is overrun with demonic creatures, and the whole of Deimos simply vanishes. A squad of marines is sent to Phobos, but all except one are quickly slaughtered. It falls to the surviving marine to grab some guns and strike back at the demons.id Software's follow-up to their genre-defining Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM is another first-person 3D shooter: full-on action seen from the space marine's perspective. Like Wolfenstein, the game consists of distinct episodes, playable in any order. The first episode, Knee-Deep in the Dead, takes place in the Phobos base and is freely available as shareware. The full game continues on Deimos in The Shores of Hell and culminates in Inferno, the final episode which takes place in Hell itself (the Sega 32x version lacks this episode).

The basic objective in each level is simply to reach the exit. Since dozens of enemies stand in the way, the only way to get there is through killing them. Switches and buttons must be pressed to advance at certain points and often color-coded locked doors will block the way - matching keycards or skull keys must be found to pass.

The game's engine technology is more advanced than Wolfenstein's, and thus the levels are more varied and complex. The engine simulates different heights (stairs and lifts appear frequently) and different lighting conditions (some rooms are pitch black, others only barely illuminated). There are outdoor areas, pools of radioactive waste that hurt the player, ceilings that come down and crush him, and unlike Wolfenstein's orthogonally aligned corridors, the walls in DOOM can be in any angle to each other. An automap helps in navigating the levels.

Stylistically, the levels begin with a futuristic theme in the military base on Phobos and gradually change to a hellish environment, complete with satanic symbols (pentagrams, upside-down-crosses and portraits of horned demons), hung-up mutilated corpses and the distorted faces of the damned.

DOOM features a large weapon arsenal, with most weapons having both advantages and drawbacks. The starting weapons are the fists and a simple pistol. Also available are a shotgun (high damage, slow reload, not good at distances), a chaingun (high firing rate, but slightly inaccurate in longer bursts) and a plasma rifle (combining a high firing rate and large damage). The rocket launcher also deals out lots of damage, but the explosion causes blast damage and must be used with care in confined areas or it might prove deadly to the player as well as the enemies. Two further (in)famous weapons in the game are the chainsaw for close-quarter carnage, and the BFG9000 energy gun, that, while taking some practice to fire correctly, can destroy most enemies in a single burst. The different weapons use four different ammunition types (bullets, shells, rockets and energy cells), so collecting the right type for a certain gun is important.

The game drops some of Wolfenstein's arcade-inspired aspects, so there are no extra lives or treasures to be collected for points, but many other power-ups are still available. Medpacks heal damage while armor protects from receiving it in the first place. Backpacks allow more ammunition to be carried, a computer map reveals the whole layout of the level on the automap (including any secret areas), light amplification visors illuminate dark areas and radiation suits allow travel over waste without taking damage. Also available are berserk packs (which radically increase the damage inflicted by the fists) as well as short-time invisibility and invulnerability power-ups.

The enemies to be destroyed include former humans corrupted during the invasion, plus demons in all shapes and sizes: fireball-throwing imps, floating skulls, pink-skinned demons with powerful bite attacks and large one-eyed flying monstrosities called Cacodemons. Each episode ends with a boss battle against one or two especially powerful creatures.

DOOM popularized multiplayer in the genre with two different modes: Cooperative allows players to move through the single-player game together, while Deathmatch is a competitive game type where players blast at each other to collect 'frag' points for a kill and re-spawn in a random location after being killed.

The 3DO and Sega32x ports lack any multiplayer modes, though the other ports retain the DOS versions multiplayer to varying degrees.
