You do not need to be a Nintendo Switch Online member to play Fortnite. Fortnite does not require a membership from Nintendo to access any of its features including voice chat. Now that we have answered a few of the important questions about Fortnite, let's detail how to download Fortnite on Nintendo Switch. Fortnite offers a range of parental controls to help you manage what a player can see and do in Fortnite. In addition to the controls within Fortnite, you can make adjustments through the Epic Games Store as well as your preferred gaming platform, including PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.

Fortnite players won't need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to keep playing the battle royale game on Nintendo's console.

Set to go live on Sept. 18, Nintendo Switch Online is a paid service that works similarly to PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold in that it lets subscribers play online against and with one another among other benefits. While not every game has an online component, most of those that do will require the service to make use of the online functionality, but Fortnite won't be one of those games.

Nintendo's FAQ about the Nintendo Switch Online service confirms this with the first answer on the page addressing a question Nintendo Switch owners were already wondering: What games can be played without Nintendo Switch Online? Nintendo shared a list of games that will require Nintendo Switch Online while listing Fortnite specifically as a game that won't need the online subscription.

'Beginning September 18, 2018, a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to participate in co-op and competitive online features for many first- and third-party Nintendo Switch games, including Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,' Nintendo's FAQ said.

'Some games, such as Fortnite, can be played online without a Nintendo Switch membership.'

Other games that don't require the membership weren't listed, but another answered question said that the product pages for certain games will denote whether or not they require the service to play online.

The FAQ gives confirmation that Fortnite doesn't need Nintendo Switch Online, but the idea that it wouldn't isn't totally unexpected. At the start of September, it was noticed that certain games on Nintendo's various product pages didn't included a message that said 'To use online services you must have access to a wireless internet connection.' Fortnite was among these games alongside Paladins and Pokemon Quest, but it was unknown at that time whether the disclaimer just hadn't been put on those games yet or whether that signaled that the game wouldn't need the service, though speculation leaned towards the latter.

Nintendo's stance on Fortnite's online component falls in line with the way Sony's PlayStation Plus service works as well with the PlayStation's online membership not needed to play Fortnite either. Epic Games' FAQ for Fortnite hasn't been updated to say anything about Nintendo Switch Online, but it does address whether the game can be played without online services from Sony and Microsoft, Xbox Live Gold being the only online subscription needed to play Fortnite at this time.

It's Christmas day, which means gamers around the world are opening up their presents and potentially jumping into a whole new ecosystem of gaming bliss. One of the hottest items this year, as it has been for the last few years, is the Nintendo Switch. Thousands or potentially millions of people will be receiving one for the first time today and after you boot it up you will likely have a lot of questions. One of the toughest things to figure out is Nintendo Switch Online. What is it? Do you want an individual or family account? We break down some of the specifics.

What is Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online is, in short, the companies version of Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. While online multiplayer gaming is free on PC, it has often required an additional payment on consoles. Nintendo began this practice with the Switch, introducing Nintendo Switch Online a few years ago. The service is a key component of the Switch, but isn't always necessary since gamers often have different needs.

Do you Need Nintendo Switch Online

What do you get with Nintendo Switch Online? The biggest thing is online multiplayer. Did you get Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Animal Crossing: New Horizons and want to play with your friends across the country? Then you need Nintendo Switch Online. It's that simple for most, as the cost is outweighed by the ability to join games with friends and random people whenever and wherever you want, with the right internet access.

There's more to NSO than just online multiplayer though. On top of that you also receive a large selection of older Nintendo games from the NES and SNES days. More get added all the time, but you can see an up to dat list of all Nintendo Switch Online games here. Along with those you also get special access to games like Tetris 99 and Super Mario Bros. 35, with some other perks like the ability to purchase NES and SNES controllers for the Switch. So overall it's a membership that amps up your Switch and its features. But do you only want a membership for yourself or should you splurge for the family account?

Individual or Family Account?

An individual Nintendo Switch Online membership costs $19.99 a year. This gets you all of the above on one account on your Switch. However, a family NSO membership is also available and costs just $34.99 a year, so less than two memberships together. For this you get up to six members on your subscription. There are stipulations, so make sure you follow all of Nintendo's rules. But if you have a lot of family members with a Switch or want to share the console a lot the family Nintendo Switch Online subscription is probably the best, especially if you can share the cost.

So that's a rundown of Nintendo Switch Online, explaining what it is, do you need it, and whether to get an individual or family account.
